Your Guide to Chemical Peels

What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a technique used to improve and smooth the texture of the skin by removing the outermost layers of the skin. To do this, we use a topical solution that induces a controlled injury to the skin, promoting the wound healing process that stimulates collagen production. After a few days or weeks, the dead skin peels off to reveal rejuvenated skin.

What do Chemical Peels Treat?

Chemical Peels can treat a variety of skin concerns! Most commonly, they are used to treat:

  • Acne
  • Acne Scars
  • Anti-Aging
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Melasma
  • Skin Texture

Difference between Light, Medium & Deep peels?

Chemical peels are classified as light, medium or deep peels based on the type of solution used and how deeply it penetrates the skin.

  • Light chemical peels are also known as superficial peels that are formulated with a mild peeling agent to gently exfoliate the skin’s top layer – the epidermis.
  • Medium depth peels vary in the strength of the peeling agent. The most common is a TCA peel – Trichloroacetic Acid Peel.
  • Deep peels are formulated to penetrate deeper into the layers of the dermis. They require more recovery time, but offer dramatic facial rejuvenation results.

There are 4 Types of Chemical Peels

AHA Peels

Made from Alpha Hydroxy Acids, the AHA Peel is considered a light peel. The most common AHA solution is formulated with Glycolic Acid, derived from cane sugar. It exfoliates the skin and stimulates collagen production. AHA solutions can be customized to balance exfoliation of the skin with sensitivity to decrease recovery time.

BHA Peels

Also considered a light chemical peel, BHA peels are formulated with Beta Hydroxy Acids like salicylic acid. BHA peels are used to reduce the appearance of acne or congested skin. While still considered a light peel, BHA peels can reach farther than AHA peels because of the lipid base in the solution that attaches to skin’s natural oils. Salicylic acid is the most common BHA peel that clears out the pores and has anti-inflammatory properties to reduce irritation that is a result of acne.

TCA Peels

TCA peels, made with Trichloroacetic Acid, are considered a medium strength peel

They are offered in a range of strengths depending on what you are treating. TCA peels can be used in combination with BHA ingredients like salicylic acid to customize the solution. Medium peels are a great way to treat hyperpigmentation, sun damage, deep wrinkles or acne scars.

Phenol Peels

Classified as a deep peel, Phenol Peels are often made with Carbonic Acid. This is the strongest chemical peel solution and produces the most dramatic results. Phenol Peels can be customized by combining other types of acids like salicylic acid to create a strong solution.

Due to the strength of these chemical peels, they should always be administered by a licensed aesthetics professional and are often recommended as a once in a lifetime application.
